CHAPTER 14

The second Sandy deactivated the spirit circle, my phone started spitting out missed call and text notifications. Rafael growled into his own phone once, and within two minutes, Boris and a fleet of armored cars were outside the little warehouse in Georgetown.

I had a million missed calls from Backman. Nervously, I called her back.

“Little drill bug,” she answered the phone. “You found him yet?”

“No. But I’ve got a lead on him. Apparently, he’s still being moved, but I’ve got the address of where he will end up. He’ll be there by Friday, so I've been told.”

She let out a little grunt. “Well, you might have to come back home in the meantime.”

“Why?”

“The ridges of the valley are starting to destabilize rapidly,” she growled. “That little monster of yours stuck in the pocket dimension is going to bury us all.”

Rafael, still on the phone, shot me a glance and nodded. He was getting the same reports as me. The Ancient was upping the earthquakes, trying to force my hand. He wouldn’t care that I couldn’t do anything without Leroy.

“You might think about coming home, see if you can talk some sense into him, stop him from shaking the town apart,” Backman said. Her voice sounded strained. “Marigold is trying to magically stabilize the valley, but it’s taking a lot out of her.”

“I got it,” I muttered. “Keep her hydrated and her feet on the ground.”

“I’m doing my best.” She hung up.

I threw my phone on the seat opposite me. “God damn it.”

Rafael took my hand and squeezed it. “I’m sending scouts to see if we can find Leroy en-route to the address in Skid Row,” he told me. “And I’ll send a team to monitor the whole neighborhood.”

“I want to go now,” I snarled, tears of frustration leaking out of my eyes. “But they might change the location of his prison if they know we’re coming. We need to do this by surprise, or else we might never find him again.”

“Yes,” Rafael agreed. “We must wait until Leroy is there.”

Hopefully they’re not hurting him. Yet, Agent King had said. He’s not being hurt yet.

I let out a groan. “It’s so ironic,” I said quietly. “I’ve never been more powerful than I am right now. And it’s making exactly zero difference to all this heartache. We still got caught in Mullin’s trap, Leroy still got taken, and I still can’t go and get him.”

“Not just yet,” Rafael reassured me. “We will, though. We will. We know exactly where he will be the day after tomorrow,” he murmured, kissing my knuckles. “And we will get him, I promise you that. For now, let’s go home.”
